Abstract

An interpretive theory of trace impurity transport in tokamaks is presented. It is based on an earlier phenomenological approach developed by the authors for describing tokamak plasma transport experiments. The present model is used to explain disparate phenomena observed in ALCATOR C and DITE in a unified phenomenological framework. Predictive numerical calculations are presented for DITE conditions. If experimentally confirmed, the model could be used to correlate plasma properties with trace impurity behaviour.
