Abstract

ABSTRACT Developing a sense of belonging in academic libraries for underrepresented communities that enhances students' engagement continues to be challenging. Offering spaces for inclusive learning, cultural expression, and celebrating diversity empowers libraries to transform themselves into centres of inclusion and belonging. Library professionals must be fully aware of the engagement opportunities that care can create and its influence on students' development of a robust connection and a sense of belonging to their institutions. This study suggests applying a pedagogy of care in academic libraries and focuses on its influence on belonging and engagement among ethnic minority communities. It aims to introduce a framework for inclusivity in academic libraries and identify strategies that support underrepresented groups to engage in learning and socio-cultural activities. The proposed framework for fostering inclusion underscores the importance of library professionals adopting a multifaceted approach that encompasses 'cultural awareness', 'inclusive learning programming', 'diversity initiatives', and 'ongoing evaluations'. Illustrative instances from the Deakin University Library will be provided for each of the proposed concepts. This study highlights the need for additional research on integrating a pedagogy of care and inclusive strategies in higher education institutions and aims to explore ways of enhancing the sense of belonging and engagement.
