Abstract

In this study, we propose a mechanism called Adaptive Failsoft Control to avoid peak traffic in mobile live streaming with a chasing playback function. Even though a cache system is present to support a chasing playback service for live streaming in base station and device-to-device communication, request concentration by highlight scenes impacts to traffic load caused by data unavailability. To avoid data unavailability, we utilized two features of live video streaming: (1) feature of streaming data, which has a hierarchical video quality, and (2) time variation of the number of requests. Every second feature enables a fallback mechanism for the cache system by prioritizing cache eviction and canceling transfer for cache missed requests. This paper discusses the simulation results of the mechanism by a request model that is appropriate for (a) avoiding peak traffic and (b) maintaining continuity of service.
