Abstract

The philosopher Djamila Ribeiro, a columnist for Folha de S.Paulo, has suffered several instances of racism throughout her life. Faced with the sequence of racist statements made by former president Jair Bolsonaro throughout his career in Brazilian politics, the philosopher used her parresía to denounce a resolution published by the government to remove quilombolas from the municipality of Alcântara, ignoring the history and cultural identity of the descendants of Brazilian slaves. Historically contextualizing the case and presidential racism, the columnist makes use of what we call journalistic parresía, presenting the five characteristics necessary for this: frank speech, coherence between discourse and way of life, use of frank speech in the public space, taking risks to make use of this frank speech in an act of courage.
