Abstract
The paper presents the initial reflections of a research project that seeks to discuss with the academic community of Tourism in Brazil the directions of higher education in the area, considering the sudden world transformations underway, accelerated by the pandemic of Covid-19 In this phase, higher education in Tourism was contextualized in the last decades until the dramatic situation experienced with the pandemic This empirical research favored higher education courses in Tourism in the state of Rio de Janeiro Listening channels were built to listen the actors involved, with questionnaires being the main instrument for data collection The situations experienced, the doubts, anxieties and hopeful speeches (or not) of teachers, students and course coordinators about the tourism phenomenon, including its academic dimension, reveal signs for a deeper reflection of the necessary transformations in higher education in Tourism, aiming to respond to the new global challenges that are reflected in this field

Summary
A partir de 1960, no Brasil, ampliou-se a presença dos meios de comunicação de massas e o consumo de lazer. Estimulam-se a criação de cursos superiores na área de Comunicação Social e de Turismo em um período de forte ampliação do ensino universitário no Brasil. Durante mais de 20 anos as universidades federais pouco se interessaram pela criação de cursos de Turismo, estes foram desenvolvidos principalmente nas Instituições de Ensino. No Quadro 1 é possível visualizar a configuração dos cursos de Turismo no estado do Rio de Janeiro nas Instituições de Ensino Superior, distribuídos de acordo com a modalidade oferecida: a distância ou presencial, o tipo de instituição: se pública ou privada e o tipo de curso de graduação: se tecnológico [GT], bacharelado [BA] ou licenciatura [LI]: Quadro 1: Oferta e tipologia dos cursos de graduação em Turismo no estado do Rio de Janeiro
