Abstract

The question of the persistence of the classical tradition in medieval art has been much investigated, but the impact of ancient coins on medieval art has received relatively insignificant attention. Ancient and especially Roman imperial coins were important vehicles for the transmission of the classical tradition, and occasionally provided important sources of medieval iconography. The present study demonstrates that the source of the image of the Madonna of Mercy, hitherto unidentified, is in Roman coins of the 2nd century.
