Abstract

Metasurface-based ultra-wideband and multifunctional polarization converters continue to generate keen research interest. In this paper, we present a novel design of reflective linear and multifunctional polarization converter. By changing metasurface volume, we obtain a significant alteration in functionalities, resulting in broadband and simultaneous linear and circular polarization conversion. The proposed design consists of a periodic array of S-shaped patch on Ultralam 1250 substrate and backed by ground plane. Keeping the substrate height at 3.175 mm, we obtain linear to linear polarization conversion with a fractional bandwidth of 91.7%. Next, choosing a height of 2.54 mm, we simultaneously obtain narrowband and ultra-wideband (bandwidth of 58.3%) linear to linear polarization conversion along with linear to circular polarization conversion with large fractional bandwidth of 31.7%. It is envisaged that such a design approach for polarization manipulation over a wide band will lead to cost-effective and robust machine to machine communication systems, in future.
