Abstract

Metamaterial is a new type of structure constructed by artificially designed geometries and possessing extraordinary physical properties. However, the functions of metamaterial are currently difficult to be adjusted and switched. A novel type of multi-pattern composite metamaterial with tunable Poisson's ratio and band gap is designed and fabricated using shape memory polymers based on curved-beams. The effects of geometric parameters and temperature on pattern switching and vibration performance is investigated by using theoretical analysis, finite element simulation and experiments. Based on this new metamaterial, a bionic multi-degree-of-freedom dexterous finger tube is designed and the major geometric parameters affecting its bending angle is investigated. The present intelligent regulation combining with the mechanical regulation provide a valuable contribution to the design of novel multifunctional tunable metamaterials, as well as further extending the applications in biomedical field.
