Abstract
We report about the observation of a novel planar defect in icosahedral AlPdMn. By use of high resolution and conventional transmission electron microscopy as well as Z-contrast imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy it was found that the defect consists of a disc-shaped precipitate of the decagonal AlPdMn phase. The plane normal vector is parallel to a fivefold direction of the quasicrystalline matrix. The precipitate is bounded by two dislocations of which the Burgers vectors were determined within the 6-D hyperlattice.
