Abstract
A novel pattern reconfigurable (PR) antenna is proposed. The PR antenna is composed of a pair of dipole elements. Each dipole element consists of a folded dipole, a short dipole and a parasitic element. A broadband balun with two pin-diode switches is utilized to feed the antenna. By changing the states of the switches, the radiation patterns can be reconfigured in two opposite directions. The PR antenna features a single-layer planar configuration and good directivities. It is shown that the PR antenna achieves an impedance bandwidth of 30.6% (2.022.75 GHz) for return loss (RL) >10 dB and its radiation pattern bandwidth is about 16.3% (2.25–2.65 GHz) for front-to-back ratio >15 dB. The antenna gain is ∼5 dBi.
