Abstract

We propose a novel method to measure high voltages using an extrinsic Fabry–Perot interferometer. The Fabry–Perot (FP) cavity consists of a graded index fiber collimator and a polyester diaphragm. The polyester film is aluminized on the outside and used as a grounding electrode. A uniform electric field is produced between the polyester film and high voltage electrode when a high voltage is applied. The polyester film shifts under the pull of the electric field, causing the FP cavity to become elongated. A high voltage is applied to the electrode, and voltage measurements are realized by detecting the shift in the spectrum for the FP sensor. The voltage sensor can measure DC voltage in the range 5–16 kV. The measurement accuracy is 1.21% at 5–10 kV and 0.61% at 10–16 kV.
