Abstract

To improve tick retrieval, we constructed a loose-fitting, white, cotton flannel garment worn while walking through tick-infested areas in Pike County, IL. Wearing this suit, we sampled areas near the ground that would not be accessible by traditional flagging techniques. Of the 235 ticks collected, 167 were Dermacentor variabilis, the American dog tick, and 68 were Amblyomma americanum, the lone star tick. This suggests that the lone star tick has migrated as far north as Pike County. Because both species are the carriers of disease, our results have a practical application for activities in west-central Illinois.
