Abstract
This paper presents a novel method for directly measuring a material’s piezoelectric coefficients based on fast gas decompression. The measured output voltage and the speed of pressure change allow for the calculation of the piezoelectric coefficients. The method is simple, fast, reliable, and easy to apply. It has been used on quartz crystal, PZT ceramic, and antimony sulfoiodide single crystals, where d11 = 2.315(25) pC/N, d33 = 506(16) pC/N, and d31 = 339(16) pC/N were determined, respectively. These values are in good agreement with those reported in the literature. The physical basis of the method and experimental results recorded for different pressures are described.
