Abstract

A new red compound found from organic sollvent extracts of sedimentary rocks is reporied inthis paper. It has been evidenced by experiments that the compound is not pollutant, por-phyrin or carotienoid pigments. By means of spectrography, UV-visible spectrophotometry, infrared spectrophotography, gas-chromatography, NPLC and GC-MS, the compound has beendetermined initially as an oxygen-containing pigment. The compound is highly stable under nor-mal temperature and shows two characteristic absorption peaks at 480 mμ and 519 mμ res-pectively. This new organic pigment has been detected in carbonate rocks, including the Ter-tiary, Triassic, Permian, Ordovician, Cambrian and Sinian rocks, But more study is neededfor understanding its structure, precursors and origin, as well as its significance in geoche-mistry.
