Abstract

In this paper, a novel rotor speed estimation technique based on a high-order sliding mode observer (HOSMO) for a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) used in variable speed wind turbines (VSWT) is presented. The novelty of this observer lies under the suggestion that only the rotor currents are measured instead of measuring both stator and rotor currents. This decrease the uncertainties implemented by physical sensors, and reduce the measurement error probability that is not tolerated in control systems. Furthermore, the investment and maintenance costs will be lower. This observer demonstrated high performance through the simulations conducted in Matlab/Simulink software.
