Abstract

The present investigation aims at the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) from Nilgiriantusciliantus leaf extract. ZnO NP was synthesized by using zinc sulphate as a precursor with simple microwave assisted green method. The obtained zinc oxide nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, UV –Vis, SEM and TEM analysis. ZnO NPs obtained was screened in vitro for its antibacterial activity against both gram positive (S .aures and S .mutans) and gram negative (E .coli and P.aeruginosa) bacteria by agar well diffusion method. In addition to this, inhibitory effect of ZnO NP against MCF-7 breast cancer cells and normal L929 fibroblast cell lines was examined by MTT assay. The experimental results show that ZnO NP synthesized in the present study possesses excellent antibacterial, and anticancer activity. Further it is also nontoxic towards normal L929 fibroblast cell lines. Thus the present study on green synthesized ZnO NP will be helpful for facilitating its future research progress focusing on biomedical fields.
