Abstract

Modified acetoacetylated castor oil (MACO) was synthesised from castor oil. The MACO was highly functionalised with approximately nine acetoacetate functional groups per molecule. The functionalised MACO was crosslinked with three highly reactive diisocyanate crosslinkers to form different bio-based coating materials, which were then cured under various conditions to fabricate biobased films. Biobased films with good mechanical and chemical properties could be obtained by curing the coating materials at ambient temperature (25 °C). More importantly, the bio-based coating material prepared using 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate as the crosslinker exhibited good shape memory.
