Abstract

Harvesting technology has exhibited a significant influence on the microalgal biomass industry. This study develops a buoy-bead flotation method and analyzes the factors affecting flotation. Besides, the mechanism of Moringa oleifera extracts microspheres (MOEMs) to improve the harvesting efficiency is also investigated. The experimental results demonstrated that a maximum harvesting efficiency of 89.13% was achieved at pH 7. It was revealed that the pH factor played an important role on harvesting efficiency, while ionic strength (<100 mM) had no obvious effect. The mechanism behind the MOEMs potential to improve the harvesting efficiency was the surface character shift from hydrophilic to hydrophobic feature. The moringa extract contained flocculating active substances that lead to the microalgae accumulation, which also played an important role in harvesting efficiency.
