Abstract
Linear and crosslinked polymer core/shell and hollow beads nearly 4 mm in maximum diameter were prepared by a new convenient template-based method. The core/shell beads were produced from the polymer coating of template beads via sorption and simultaneous polymerization of monomer. Hollow beads were easily prepared by removing the core. Owing to the coating process, which significantly depends on sorption and dissolving competition, only the solvent having appropriate solubility to monomer and density can induce perfect coating. The diameters and shell thicknesses of beads can be simply controlled by the template beads diameter and monomer concentrations. The advantages including the ease of preparation and the facility to fabricate ultra large size hollow beads make this method a considerable candidate way to produce beads for special application.
