Abstract

It is necessary to improve the power quality for the normal operation of the loads as well as the power system, where the unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) is considered as an effective solution. In this paper, considering the degree of freedom (DOF), a novel 7-leg UPQC is proposed for the 3-phase 4-wire power system, which is simplified from the dual-4-leg UPQC with complete compensation functions; then, modeling, power rating, control, and modulation of the 7-leg UPQC are analyzed and compared with the dual-4-leg UPQC, indicating that the 7-leg UPQC is capable of compensating balanced/unbalanced voltage sag (including zero-sequence voltage), unbalanced current (including zero-sequence current), reactive current, and harmonic current as the dual-4-leg UPQC using the same control strategy, while the cost of the 7-leg UPQC is lower. The feasibility of the 7-leg UPQC is verified by simulations.
