Abstract
The Yi-yüan Jen-chien is a collection of short biographies of men who served as Supervising Secretaries in the Offices of Scrutiny during the Ming dynasty. The editorial principles (fan-li) provide a useful summary of terminology concerning the ways in which people attained and left civil office, which is translated here.
