Abstract

SUMMARY The compositions of fresh olivine (Fa 30 ), augite, pigeonite, orthopyroxene and plagioclase have been determined by electron microprobe analysis of the chilled marginal rock at the base of the Little Whin Sill, at Turn Wheel Linn, Weardale, County Durham. Olivine is altered to talc plus carbonates (pistomesite and calcite), plagioclase to kaolinite and K-feldspar. Pyroxene is little altered. The fresh olivine may have been in equilibrium with the magma on intrusion, but at the end of its range of crystallisation.
