Abstract
SummaryDetails of admissions to Southern Ontario Detoxication Centres were obtained for a sample of 50 skid‐row alcoholics admitted to a rural residential rehabilitation programme (Bon Accord Farm). In the year prior to admission to Bon Accord the men averaged 3.7 detox admissions, while in the year after leaving this average increased to 7.2 admissions. Rates of detox admission after leaving and changes in these rates from the previous year were unrelated to length of stay. It is suggested that Bon Accord should be seen as one of a range of social agencies that made up the social world of public inebriates and that such agencies should be principally valued for their humanitarian and care giving functions. An improved co‐ordination of skid‐row agencies is suggested as is a more careful assessment of candidates for rehabilitation programmes.
