Abstract

In this paper a model operator-variational approach is considered for the determination of the two-particle correlations in finite nuclei. The essential difference from some other work is that the model operator is not assumed to be (left) unitary. Two different expressions for the two-body part in a cluster expansion of the energy functional (ΔE)2 are firstly obtained and a variational method with a separation condition is subsequently applied. This leads in general to coupled equations for the correlated, relative, two-nucleon wave functions. Finally, the method is applied to the calculation of the binding energy of the4He nucleus.
