Abstract

In the present paper, the redox processes in the aquatic environment were studied, by conducting fundamental research and the mechanisms of chemical reactions with the participation of natural oxidizing agents in the presence of transition metals. It is a synthesis of scientific results including a new vision regarding the chemical reactions with one or two electrons transfer, which explains how the free radicals and complex compounds with partial charge transfer are formed. This view includes an explanation for the phenomenon of aggressive free radical generation that “kills” biota, rather than destroying pollutants, and why the intermediate particles resulting from chemical and biochemical processes act much softer.
