Abstract

An isolate belonging to the Aspergillus nidulans group was cultured from diseased human fingernails on Sabouraud's agar during routine mycological investigations. On close study it showed almost full agreement with A. nidulans (Eidam) Wint. (Thom and Raper, 1945) except for one striking difference in ascospore morphology. In the new isolate the ascospores possessed two dentate equatorial crests each. Such finely toothed crests around the equatorial region of the ascospore are not found in any of the known species or varieties of the A. nidulans group (Thom and Raper, 1945; Fennell and Raper, 1955). We propose to describe this interesting fungus as a new variety of A. nidulans.
