Abstract
A new finite element of a thin spatial beam is proposed using the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF). In contrast to other large deformation formulations, the equations of motion contain constant mass matrices and generalized gravity forces as well as zero centrifugal and Coriolis inertia forces. The only nonlinear term is a vector of elastic forces. The elements of equation of motion are developed in details including air resistance forces and constraint equations to satisfy boundary conditions. An application to the dynamics of a rotating light strip is considered. The results show a possibility of using this element in large deformation problems.
