Abstract

The Pygmy Owls from central Argentina differ from other races ofGlaucidium brasilianum above all by their large body-size. Brown, red and grey morphs are found. Most specimens belong to a brown morph with tails barred in brown and rusty. The habitat is rather open country with small groves or groups of trees and bushes, often used for grazing cattle. DNA-evidence (nucleotide substitution of the DNA) show differences up to about 1%, if compared with the nominate race. Vocalizations are rather identical with otherGlaucidium brasilianum from South America.
