Abstract

In February/March 1995, the author participated in the Mt Cameroon Flora Project with botanists from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and Limbe Botanic Garden, supported by "Earthwatch" volunteers. During collecting on the southeastern slopes of Mt Cameroon, a species of Tylophora R. Br. was found climbing in primary forest at approximately 1000 m altitude. Tylophora is a large and widespread genus in tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World, and c. 30 species are scattered over the African continent. Bullock (1963) listed nine species for West Tropical Africa, five of which are reported to occur in Cameroon. At first glance, the plant seemed to be in bud or in an early postfloral stage with just sepals remaining. However, close examination showed that the single tiny structures near some leaf axils were small flowers with an almost urceolate corolla.
