Abstract
Continuing work by the junior author (DJNH) towards the production of a checklist of the Catol6s area (Mun. Abaira) of the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, identified a series of collections of a new species of Mikania Willd. resembling Mikania salzmanniifolia DC. but with considerably smaller, almost rotund leaves. Work by the senior author on a recent visit to Kew confirmed that the material was indeed of a new species which is described and illustrated below. Mikania is the largest genus in the tribe Eupatorieae Cass. with about 430 species (King & Robinson 1987, Holmes 1995). About 170 species have so far been reported from the Brazilian uplands in eastern and southeastern Brazil, with about 150 of these being endemic (Holmes 1995). The Serra do Espinhago and Chapada Diamantina, in Minas Gerais and Bahia States respectively, are particularly rich in species. The new species described below is the eighteenth to be reported from the area since 1980 (see Hind 1993, 1994; Holmes 1991, 1992; King & Robinson 1980, 1981a, 1981b).
