Abstract

Cuphea is the largest genus in the Lythraceae with about 250 species distributed throughout Latin America (Mabberley 1987), principally in Brazil and Mexico. Within Brazil, the states of Minas Gerais, Goias and Bahia contain the largest number of species, many of which are narrowly restricted endemics, for example, Cuphea sessilifolia Mart. subsp. bahiensis Lourt. from the region of Morro do Chap6u in Bahia; C. teleandra Lourt. from Grao-Mogol in Minas Gerais (Lourteig 1987) and C. rubro-virens T. Cavalcanti (Cavalcanti 1989) also from Minas Gerais. Graham & Kleiman (1987) believe that the primary centre of speciation for Cuphea is found in the upland regions of eastern Brazil, with a major secondary centre in Mexico. Study of the Lythraceae from "campos rupestres" of the Cadeia do Espinhago and the Chapada Diamantina, a chain of mountains situated in the eastern part of Brazil, has shown that the largest number of species of Cuphea is to be found in Minas Gerais. Within the state the genus is best represehted in terms of morphological variation and number of species in the Serra do Cip6 region, where 11 species from 6 of the 14 sections of Cuphea
