Abstract

The authors develop a novel heuristic algorithm, SCHEDULER, for three-layer gridless channel routing. This algorithm is based on a mapping of two-processor resource constraint scheduling to three-layer gridless channel routing using the HVH model. This mapping permits the application of well-developed scheduling heuristics to the channel routing problem. SCHEDULER has been implemented and tested extensively. Experimental results show that the quality of the solutions generated is comparable to that of routings produced by existing three-layer channel routers assuming that doglegs are not allowed. Also, the scheduling-based heuristics are very fast and can route benchmark examples in less than two minutes on a SUN 3/60 workstation. >
