Abstract

A new nonparasitic lamprey, Lethenteron matsubarai, from Shokotsu River, northern Hokkaido, Japan, is described and illustrated. The holotype (No. BC 77-71) is deposited in The Ichthyological Collection, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. This species by its nonfunctional intestinal tract and smaller eye and disc is easily separable from the parasitic Lethenteron japonicum. By its high number of trunk myomeres, 66–70 (mean 68.5), it is distinguishable from the nonparasitic Lethenteron reissneri. The description is based on seven metamorphosed individuals.
