Abstract

ABSTRACT The present paper reports a new species of a nematode of Aetobatus narinari caught off the Bayof Bengal at Visakhapatnam. It could be distinguished by body measurements, arrangement of papillaeon the lips, length of intestinal caecum, position of vulva, number and arrangement of caudal papillae,position and size of spicules and shape of tail. The new species is named as Hysterothylaciumaetobatum . Key words : Hysterothylacium aetobatum n.sp., nematode, intestine, Aetobatus narinari ,Visakhapatnam .INTRODUCTIONThe course of a survey of the parasites ofmarine eel fishes of Bay of Bengal (Visa-khapatnam), a new species of a nematode Hysterothylacium aetobatum of the familyAnisakidae Railliet et Henry, 1912 was recoveredfrom the intestine of Aetobatus narinari . The newspecies is described in this paper and it has beenshown that they have to be considered asconstituting a new species.MATERIAL AND METHODSThe host Aetobatus narinari was obtained fromBay of Bengal at Visakhapatnam.Nematodes were fixed in hot 70% alcohol andwere preserved in 10% glycerol. Glycerol andcreosote were used to facilitate detailedexaminations. For enface view examination thehead of one male parasite was cut with a sharpblade and brought into the desired position underthe cover glass using creosote on the slide.All measurements are given in millimetres.OBSERVATIONSFamily: Anisakidae Railliet et Henry, 1912Genus:
