Abstract

SummaryA new methodology for the rapid and robust evaluation of the electrostatic stabilization of latex particles has been developed. It is based on the interpretation of the backscattering profile obtained using a Turbiscan Lab®. The experimental approach employs Multiple Light Scattering (MLS) in agitated measurement cells so the colloidal stability study can be performed at moderate concentration of latexes particles. Coalescence of the latex particles at different volume fraction was provoked by the addition of an aliquot of a concentrated solution of monovalent electrolyte (NaCl). The backscattering spectra were treated in order to follow the variation of the stability as a function of salt concentration, and from this variation to identify the critical coagulation concentration (CCC) of the system under investigation, in a rapid and robust manner.
