Abstract

Fontane’s novel juxtaposes and reverses the “Cinderella” fairy tale and Kleist’s Kathchen von Heilbronn. The recognition of this sheds new light on the development of Effi and on the structure of the novel. The novel’s genesis is also illuminated in the essay through Fontane’s comments on R.Benedix’ Aschenbrodel and Kleist’s play.
