Abstract

A new Tl-based high- T c cuprate superconductor Tl 2Ba 5Cu 4O x has been discovered. Large, thick, single crystals have been successfully grown by a self-flux method. Composition, crystal structure and superconducting properties have been studied. The exact composition is analyzed to be Tl 1.41Ba 4.17Cu 4.59O x . The structure is tetragonal with lattice constants a = 5.5023(7) A ̊ and c = 27.257(3) A ̊ , and belongs to the space group I4/mmm. The superconducting transition temperature and the lower critical field at 5 K are about 87 K and 8 Oe, respectively. Many defects in Tl 1.41Ba 4.17Cu 4.59O x are found to weaken the pinning force.
