Abstract

This paper introduces the Design Education Special Interest Group (DESIG) of the Design Society, a new forum for sharing experience in design teaching. It presents the background to the Design Society and the origins of the DESIG and then outlines the aims and objectives of the DESIG, in particular noting the organization’s initial steps towards establishing an agenda for a program of collaboration in design teaching. The activities of the DESIG include co-sponsoring the International Engineering and Product Design Education (IEPDE) series of conferences with the Institution of Engineering Designers and international host institutions. The paper gives an overview of the themes of IEPDE’04, held at TU Delft in September 2004, as an illustration of the current interests of the design education community and of topics for the future attention of the DESIG.© 2004 ASME
