Abstract
Motivated by a study of the Dirac equation in quaternionic quantum mechanics, I propose a novel embedding of quantum electrodynamics in an SU(2) non-abelian gauge structure. The construction eliminates the Dirac sea, and implies charge quantization with integer charges. Because of Witten's global SU(2) anomaly, the SU(2)-extended electrodynamics can only appear as a subsector of a larger gauge structure.
