Abstract

In order to improve the ability of eddy current probes for inspection of hidden defects in metal materials, a new eddy current probe using a solenoid coil as the excitation source was proposed based on the analysis of eddy current distribution using ANSYS software. With application of the new probe to inspection of defects, vertical eddy currents of larger penetration depth can be generated in metal materials. And the detectable depth of delamination defects in materials can be greatly improved. Simulation results show that the new probe proposed in this paper has strong detection ability and can detect the internal delamination defects in the 25 mm depth of the stainless steel thick-walled structure.
