Abstract
ABSTRACTFocused antenna arrays may be designed to realize the desired near field patterns by optimizing the power transmission efficiency between the focused antenna array and a testing antenna introduced at the focal plane. The optimization theory takes the mutual coupling effects into the design consideration and can control the focal distance more precisely. In this article, a 4 × 4 focused microstrip antenna array with feeding network on the backside has been designed with the optimization theory. The target focal distance is chosen 10 cm away from the focused antenna array, and the maximum field intensity occurs 8 cm away from the array, which is about 80% of the focal distance. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
