A new clinically focused master's program in biomedical engineering

Abstract

Summary form only given. Stimulated by the increased need for biomedical engineers and scientists, The Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Aarhus his established a MS program in biomedical engineering. The program is interdisciplinary in scope, with focus on cardiovascular issues. Advanced courses in engineering specialities such as biomedical signal analysis and processing, biophysics and biomechanics are offered by The Engineering College of Aarhus. Courses in anatomy, physiology, pathology, biostatistics and medical research techniques are offered by The Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Aarhus. Medical imaging techniques and short courses in clinical chemistry, hematology, electrophysiology, catheterization, pharmacology, anesthesia, cardiac surgery and extracorporeal circulation are offered by the Danish School of Perfusion. Finally, 12 weeks of clinical hospital training takes place at 6 different clinical departments at Skejby Sygehus, Aarhus University Hospital, where the students homeroom and labs are situated as well. This gives the students the opportunity to see and learn how things are done in daily practical clinical routine, and by that develop a better clinical insight. The duration of the study is 4 semesters and it is mainly geared towards engineers with a B.Sc. in electrical engineering or computer science. Students who have successfully completed the Master of Science program may apply for the Ph.D. program in biomedical engineering at University of Aarhus.
