Abstract
Mukhopadhay (1986) argues at the beginning of his discussion of our paper (Massoud and Kinghorn, 1985) that huminite-rich peats do not exist in oxic conditions, which in his view contradicts an assumption by the Authors: page 86. We did not discuss in that page or elsewhere in the paper the formation of huminite-rich peats. The page contains a brief review of the organic components (phytoclasts) of kerogen, in which we made reference to Hunt's classification of organic matter into sapropelic and humic, and his definition of these terms (Hunt, 1979; p. 273-274).
