Abstract
Fluorescence observation carried out as a complement to the microscopic study of organic matter, renews the petrology of coal components, by improving the diagnosis of hydrogenated constituents, and by displaying organo-mineral associations which are the ground-masses of oil shales and source rocks. The development of this method in the SNEA(P) laboratory has led to a general classification of fossil organic matter, including non-figured facies and resulting in a special chapter on bituminous products. Such a classification takes into account the recent developments in the geochemistry as well as the sedimentology of organic matter. It results in an interesting application for visualizing oil source rocks and the primary migration of hydrocarbons.
