Abstract

A new automatic identification system, deployed for rubber tyred gantry (RTG) crane' applications, is designed based on a single and low-cost global positioning system (GPS) receiver. The new system is characterized by low cost, easy installation. However, the low-cost GPS receiver provides lower position accuracy, a new method that so-called “stack transition tracking” is present to improve the performances and enhance the reliability of the automatic identification system. The systems are successfully applied to Qingdao Qianwan Container Terminal. The performance and effectiveness of the system in automatic identification of RTG crane was confirmed and proved by the practical applications.
