Abstract
Summary Some complications associated with blepharoplasty may be avoided if the following factors are kept in mind: 1. Absolute h˦mostasis is essential. 2. Skin only should be excised, not skin and muscle, as it is difficult to judge how much muscle to remove. 3. In cutting off the excess skin of the lower lid, the excess skin is drawn medially to prevent a “dog ear” at the lateral aspect of the eye. 4. The upper lid skin is rotated laterally to get rid of the pouchiness of the inner aspect of the upper lid. 5. Eyelid fat is found in three pockets in the lower lid and in two pockets in the upper lid. Separate muscle incisions are used over each pocket. 6. In excising the excess skin in younger people one can be a little more liberal than one thinks because the skin has more resilience, but in older people one has to be extremely conservative because the muscle and skin have little resilience.
