Abstract

SummaryIntrinsic colours have been determined for 247 of the 275 variable stars listed in the “Catalogue of the Light and Colour Curves of Cepheids in the UBV System” by N. Nikolov. Algorithms for computing intrinsic colour are derived from 59 standard stars. The intrinsic colours of the standards were derived from four sets of data from colour excesses deemed reliable in four references. The colours of the standard stars indicate a need for revival of Eggen’s concept of discretee classes of Cepheid Variables. A new principle of least reddening is used to improve the accuracy of the intrinsic colours of normal supergiants, where these are needed, and to test our derived colour excesses for the 247 Cepheids.
