Abstract

Particles occur as solutions of nonlinear (unitarian) classical field theories. The present work suggests that the quantum mechanics of those particles may under certain circumstances be derivable from the nonlinear field equations.A Born—Infeld type equation is studied, (1 +ϕt2)ϕx - 2ϕxϕtϕxt - (1 -ϕx2)ϕt = 0 By redefining the field strength asϕt →ϕt +il0∂/∂x it is shown that the fourth-order equation -l02ϕxxxx +ϕxx -ϕt = 0 results, which for high wavenumbersl02k2 ≫ 1 is equivalent to a Schrodinger equation.
