Abstract

SUMMARY While teaching information retrieval techniques on a new educational programme—a Master's programme in applied environmental measurement techniques—given at Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden, the need of a multimedia-based package to help the students get through the information jungle became obvious. The main problem was to find information relevant outside the standard course material. It is in this situation we plan to use a multimedia-based guide as a way of helping the students. The guide should also help the teachers involved who are not familiar with the art of retrieving relevant information from the vast amount of information available today. The guide will be incomplete from the start. The idea is to design the guide in such a way that it is easy for the user to extend it according to his/her increased knowledge in the area.
