Abstract
A 57Fe Mössbauer and X-ray study of compounds around the composition Nd 5Fe 2B 6 confirmed the rhombohedral structure proposed for Nd 5Fe 2B 6 in the literature but showed that a homogeneity range of any significance is absent. It is proposed that the hyperfine field 2.4 T at 5 K that develops at the Fe located at 6 c sites in Nd 5Fe 2B 6 is due to a conduction electron spin polarization induced by the RKKY exchange interaction between the Nd moments.
